Heavy Metal Stabilization in Deep Agricultural Soils Using Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria

نویسندگان

چکیده

Heavy metal stabilization in soil was investigated using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Samples were collected from three agricultural soils near abandoned mines, and a nine-week batch experiment performed following the classification of as ① non-sterile with SO42- (SO4), ② sterile SRB (SRBo), ③ (SS). metals extracted 0.1 N HCl or Mehlich, efficiency evaluated by comparing results to control. Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd (4–55%) had higher than control Mehlich extraction, while Pb (2–41%) extraction. The SS samples demonstrated high (17–55%), whereas SRBo (2–37%) showed low efficiency. Dissolved As decreased supernatant SO4 samples, especially high-As soil. These indicate that incorporating into contaminated heavy can effectively decrease mobility metals.

Humic Acid-Oxidizing, Nitrate-Reducing Bacteria in Agricultural Soils

UNLABELLED This study demonstrates the prevalence, phylogenetic diversity, and physiology of nitrate-reducing microorganisms capable of utilizing reduced humic acids (HA) as electron donors in agricultural soils. Most probable number (MPN) enumeration of agricultural soils revealed large populations (10(4) to 10(6) cells g(-1) soil) of microorganisms capable of reducing nitrate while oxidizing ...

Determination of Heavy Metal in Agricultural Soils near and Far From the Cement Factory in Tehran, Iran

Background: Heavy metals (HMs) are one of the most important polluting substances emitted to the environment during cement production. Tehran Cement Factory located in the southeastern of Tehran, Iran, closer to agricultural lands cultivates alfalfa, barley, and maize as feed. The objective of the study was to determine the concentration of HMs in agricultural soils. Methods: Thirty six soil...

Removal of Metal Ions from Mine Effluents Using Bacterial Reactions by Sulfate Reducing Bacteria

Metals in mine effluents, especially metal mines, have been a major environmental concern. High mobility of the metals in solution and the subsequent lowering of discharge limits by the EPA have necessitated expensive chemical treatment of the effluent. Bacteriological reactions, particularly by Sulfate Reducing Bacteria, have been known to reduce metals content in water by precipitating them a...

Assessment of uncertainty and risk in modeling regional heavy-metal accumulation in agricultural soils.

Present agricultural land use and atmospheric deposition may lead to heavy-metal accumulation rates in soils that may violate soil quality standards in the future. To undertake suitable preventive measures against heavy-metal enrichment, flux balances in agroecosystems and their uncertainties have to be assessed. For this reason we developed an empirical stochastic model, PROTERRA-S, that consi...
